The tax collector on the Ông Đốc gives receipts, and his latest one was pinned to the shirt of a dead interpreter.

Lieutenant (junior grade) Gatewood commands Five-Eight, a fifty-foot aluminum Swift boat checking the fishing fleets off the Ông Đốc river mouth in the Gulf of Thailand. He comes from Iowa, which has no ocean, and he calls boardings over the radio like a ballgame. His boat captain, Villarreal, chews coffee beans and takes the helm without asking. Teasley reads the radar, Fenn rides the twin fifties, Yoakum always goes first, and Moody keeps the diesels running.

Then their interpreter, Tốt, is found tied to a stake-net pole with a tax receipt on his shirt. The river calls the man who did it Ông Đáy, Mister Stake-Net. When the staff orders Swift raids up the rivers, Gatewood volunteers Five-Eight and Six-Two. The French charts are wrong, the bar dries on a tide he does not know, and a boat built for swell must now fight in a ditch.
