Five-Eight’s skipper talks on the radio like a ballgame announcer, and someone in the burned forest is listening.
Lieutenant (junior grade) Gatewood and the crew of Five-Eight work the U Minh coast from the LST Terrell County, carrying Vietnamese Marines into creeks to dig out weapons caches. Moody is back from Japan with new pink skin on his hands and a frying pan clamped to the starboard engine manifold. Teasley is teaching a mynah bird named Senator to talk. Villarreal reminds his skipper that Mister Bascombe just said “Five-Eight, boarding” and hung up.
The fishing junks on this coast look like the weapons junks, and some carry guns under the nets. A porter boy swims out to the boat shouting “Chiêu hồi” and hands over a tax chit with the real name of Ông Đáy on it. Then Gatewood takes Five-Eight and Six-Two up a creek after Marines cut off with their wounded, and the staff in Cam Ranh asks for him to be relieved. Ashore, a man with headphones writes down every word Five-Eight says.
