A handler, a black Labrador, and four operations in country that takes the trail away.
Sergeant Wade Gresham tracks men through Vietnam with a dog trained never to bark. Banner can follow a scent line no man can see — and can tell his handler, honestly, when there is nothing there. Both turn out to matter.
Across four books the ground gets harder and the paper gets shorter: monsoon, rock, hard-surface road, a hilltop churned daily by friendly engineers, and a veterinary clearance that shrinks with every operation until it forbids almost everything.
