A holiday truce is on, Six-Two is gone, and Gatewood has orders to stay out of the river.
Lieutenant (junior grade) Gatewood keeps Five-Eight off the Ông Đốc mouth with a truce order folded in his shirt pocket. Fire only if fired upon. Villarreal is back aboard with a paper sack of coffee beans, Brackett is the new man who swims, and Teasley’s mynah, Senator, has learned to key the radio and call Lorimer on Eight-Six. When a rifleman opens up from a line of family sampans, Gatewood holds his fire and lays his whole boat broadside between the rifle and the lanterns.
Then Six-Two is taken on the river. Her crew are prisoners somewhere in the U Minh, and two long furrows in the mud show where her hull was towed upstream. Commander Brandt says recovery is a province matter. Quarles makes Gatewood repeat the order over the radio, word for word. That night Five-Eight crosses the bar with no lights and heads up the river.
