A mission school in the fog, a courtyard full of wounded, and nothing can land.
High in a mountain pass in the monsoon, a deuce-and-a-half slides off the road and hangs over the drop with a rifleman pinned under its bed. Tomczak holds the man flat while the jack comes up the column, and beside him is Duquette, a new medic with a bag that had never been wet until this week and a habit of reciting what might be wrong.
The platoon comes down to a base in the fog south of a city. Rockets come in at dusk, and in the night the whole northern sky goes up. Sent out along the road, Ross's squad ends up holding a mission school and its church with wounded civilians inside, while the fog sits on the roof and keeps every helicopter away.
