The barometer has fallen off the printed scale, and Cordray is already damaged.
Riding light, with no sun, no stars and no position he fully trusts, Ward Harlan has to find a typhoon from a backing wind and a building sea. His destroyer carries the wounds of earlier operations: a leaking sonar well kept in check by a portable pump, sprung seams, weakened foundations, and a depth-charge rack held partly by wire.
Then the rack starts to walk across the fantail. Before the storm reaches full strength, Harlan must send men aft through green water to safe and clear live depth charges, while below decks the pump holding back the sea depends on machinery that may not last the night.
