Every shell fired at the beach is one less shell for the next fight.
Cordray is assigned a dawn shore bombardment, and Ward Harlan starts with arithmetic his destroyer cannot escape. Slow enough to shoot accurately, she brings all her guns to bear. Fast enough to dodge, she loses much of that firepower. And every round spent ashore comes out of the stock she may need when enemy aircraft arrive.
Then a concealed battery on the headland finds Cordray's range. Harlan must decide how long to hold his firing course while the enemy walks shells closer, when to turn his guns on the battery, and how much he can afford to spend on a target that may only be pretending to be dead.
