When the horn sounds, two Navy gunships have three minutes to get off the deck.
Lieutenant (junior grade) Hal Sayre flies a worn-out Army Huey with a Navy number on the tail, from a landing pad on the stern of an old tank landing ship anchored in the Mekong Delta. His job is to cover the river patrol boats when they take fire from banks nobody on the water can see into. His crew is a Cajun crew chief, a Texas copilot writing to every girl in his high school yearbook, and a nineteen-year-old cook on the door gun.
Across the paddies, a patient Viet Cong commander called Sáu Đước has learned how the gunships fly, and he has brought a heavy gun to the river to prove it. One wing aircraft goes down in the water. The pad catches fire. Sayre's own helicopter is grounded by the squadron's maintenance officer at the worst possible time. And the old man in the mangroves is still waiting.
