The fire has been out for a year. Everything it left standing is still coming down.
Last summer's fire burned most of the north half of the park, and the burn is closed. Dead trees fall without any wind, burned-out roots leave holes still warm at the bottom, and one thunderstorm can bring a slope down. A trail crew has found a small arrow made of green sticks at the closure gate, lashed with fishing line and pointing in. Boot tracks go past it, big and small.
Marisol Etchegaray wants somebody quiet with a dog to find out who is walking in her closure. In the middle of the black, Juniper takes Jonah Pike to a patch of ground the fire missed, where a man named Abel Duchene meets them at a pole gate with a basket of eggs, and another man holds a rifle.
