A family of four went into the gorge for two nights. The creek came up, and they did not come out.
Park Service ranger Jonah Pike and his English Shepherd, Juniper, are sent to Hemlock Gorge for storm season. Before they reach the ranger station they have pulled a pinned kayaker off a fallen hemlock and split the dog's pad on wet sandstone. That night a grandmother in Ohio calls. The Hagens, two parents and two children, never came out of the Narrows, and their car is still at the trailhead.
When Jonah and a local ranger named Tully reach the campsite, it looks as if a bear has been through it. Juniper will not follow the drag marks. She turns the other way, toward the rock shelters under the bluffs, where somebody has been digging.
