A seventeen-year-old went up the mountain alone the night the first storm came in.
Jonah Pike is back on Mount Kellan, where he was a climbing ranger, and on his first day he tears his shoulder hauling a climbing-school client out of a crevasse. Then the mountain closes ahead of an early storm, and a mother calls. Her daughter, Kit Chavira, was meant to climb with a friend. The friend cancelled in the parking lot, and Kit went up by herself in a green jacket with an orange pack.
Jonah and Juniper go up into the wind with Garrett, his old partner, running operations below. Kit's track is not the only one on the upper mountain. There is a stranger's line going over the col, a man dead on the moraine, and an old mine called the Silver King that somebody is using.
