They came to buy horses at the Arikara towns. By morning the sandbar was a killing ground.
In the spring Asa Crowder is back on the Missouri with Ashley, hobbling horses on a bar below the two Arikara towns. Cal Ogle has come up from Potosi with news of home and a letter from Asa's mother, still sealed. Then the firing starts from above, the horses go down on the picket line, and the men on the bar have the river at their backs.
The survivors drop downriver to wait for the Army. Leavenworth comes up with soldiers, cannon and a large party of Sioux, and Asa ends up counting round shot, standing night guard on the horse lines and carrying notes between men who do not agree on what they came to do.
