Hugh Glass met a grizzly sow in the brush, and the men with him had to decide what they owed him.
Asa Crowder rides with Andrew Henry's party overland after the Arikara fight. Men are shot from a cutbank in the dark, and later a sow grizzly with cubs catches Glass alone in a thicket. Asa is the first one to reach him. He and Bridger carry Glass on a litter while Fitzgerald says they are carrying a corpse.
Henry cannot hold a whole party in that country for a dying man. The book follows both halves of what comes next: the party going on to the Bighorn and a hard winter, and Glass, alone, making his way across frozen country on one good leg and a stick.
