Somewhere south of the Wind River there was a way over the mountains, and they had to find it in winter.
Wolves take a mare at the Bighorn post, and Asa Crowder goes through the river ice. Henry sends him south with a letter for Jedediah Smith, who may be with the Crow. Asa rides with Pete Desautel and Tobe Lusk, whose right hand the frost has ruined, to the Crow camps and then on with Smith's small party.
Snow buries the camp in one night, and on the open basin the horses start to go down. Past a slope so gentle it does not feel like climbing, they reach streams running west and beaver on the Green, and in the spring someone has to take the furs back down the Sweetwater in a boat made of bull hide.
