The machines do what they are told. Somebody is telling them through the fishing fleet.
A hospital on the island of Vesk has run out of medicine. The only water deep enough to bring more runs up one lane and through one dredged channel, and the machines are sinking every boat that tries it.
Tessa Rourke and her falcon, Brim, are on a warship with no aircraft on her deck. The ship has a box that lies to the machines. Every lie works once.
From the roof of an ice plant, with a girl from the town keeping a school notebook, Tessa sees the pattern. A small red light comes on at a masthead, and the swarm changes. Then another light, on another boat. The orders are being passed hull to hull, on boats that belong to men who eat what they catch.
Brim cannot climb. Three feathers in his right wing are not his own. But he sees what moves before anyone does, and he looks at the thing that is doing something.
The ship has an order to close the water and engage everything in it. The ferry with the medicine is going anyway.
Swarm Line is the third novel in Sky Shield, the series about a falconer, her bird, and the machines they hunt.
