Every screen on the field says the sky is clear. The falcon will not stop looking south.
Tessa Rourke flies a gyrfalcon named Brim off the apron at Hollis Field. One evening he hangs over the south fence, facing empty ground, and will not come down. The board in the sensor shack is clean.
At first light, small drones come over the wire. They fly into the radar heads. They spray foam over the camera dome. The base's own defense system sees every one of them, and marks every one of them friendly.
Then the jammer goes on. Every radio on the field goes quiet, and so does the little transmitter on Brim's tail. From now on Tessa can fly him only as far as she can see him.
The drones are not thinking for themselves. Somebody a long way off is flying them, and his signal goes through a small aircraft circling so high that nothing on the base can reach it. The other end is on the ground, somewhere south of the wire.
There is one thing on Hollis Field that can find it. He weighs no more than a cat.
Black Sky is the first novel in Sky Shield, the series about a falconer, her bird, and the machines they hunt.
