A flamethrower fitting in a ditch, and a major who will not believe it without a body attached.
North of the Trace, the dozers are cutting a road through the war, and Sergeant Emmett Szabo's Force Recon team is sent to see what waits at the far end. An Army pilot sets them down miles from where the map says they are, and nobody upstairs will admit it. The radio is weak and the water is low. In the hedgerows along the cart track where Marine companies will walk, a regiment is digging firing slits in the roots, and the team lies still and watches it being built.
Then a tracker picks up their trail and brings a flame section after them. A grenadier goes down in the heat, and the only way home is across open ground. Nobody is coming for them.
