The hedgerows are behind them. The road ahead is under fire.
After Normandy, Talbot's battered platoon finally reaches open country and a column racing east that almost never stops. Then a hidden enemy gun lays itself along a straight woodland road and starts destroying the column from the front, and the tank destroyers must leave the road and work through the trees to hit it from an angle it was never meant to face.
But the advance keeps moving. Communications are failing, vehicles are wearing out, and fuel is becoming as precious as ammunition. A tank destroyer with a sound engine, a working gun and an empty tank may be harder to save than one already burning.
