They have powerful guns, thin armor and one rule: never fight a tank head-on.
Lieutenant Talbot has a platoon of tank destroyers, a manual that says what they are supposed to do, and no combat experience proving any of it. Then, on a raised road between North African mountains, a scout jeep comes back fast with German armor behind it.
Most of the platoon can get off the road into folds and scrub. Blackjack cannot, because the shoulder drops away onto broken stone, so Sergeant Voss turns his vehicle across the road and becomes the wall the platoon needs. The first shots land, and a long-gunned German tank starts firing back. Talbot is about to learn what no manual could teach him: shoot the side of something looking elsewhere, and leave before it answers.
