A bulldozer pushes the western bank into the low ground. Wire runs out halfway along the southern face. Every day the shape of the place is different from the map on the commander's board.
Gresham arrives into a position generating alerts nobody can interpret — and holding a new veterinary clearance that is shorter and worse than the last one. Two casts a day. Nothing on worked-over ground, which is nearly the whole hill.
A scout-dog handler has been reporting the same alert on the same sector for weeks, and being thanked, and ignored.
Meanwhile the engineers have just driven a covered way from outside the wire to the middle of the command post. It is correct engineering. It is also a road.
