The ridge has wounded on it, the rounds keep walking along the face, and the only place to land is a bench of rock.
The rain comes back. On a road out of the hills an engineer private lies in a ditch with a leg his friends are afraid to lift, and Ray Mendez asks for one look at him where he lies while shots come out of the tree line.
Then the calls start coming from the ridge. There is an aid station on a bulldozed shelf called Aid Cut, guns on the crest, and a sergeant who is working harder to breathe every hour. With the valley full of cloud, Tom Keane and Len Beaudry have to find a way in, and the wounded have to come down an open slope on litters in the gaps between the rounds.
