The missile battery that has hunted Gimlet flight all year has gone quiet, and Thad Ogletree does not believe the silence means it is gone.
Ogletree comes back from the hospital at Udorn to fly in the back seat of an F-105F Wild Weasel called SALTY, behind Captain Vance Pegram, a soft-spoken Utah engineer. This autumn the target is the MiG field northwest of Hanoi. A steady radar lock holds on a Weasel and nothing is launched until MiG-21s come in from behind. Ogletree builds a plan to use the lock against the MiGs, but the weather, the fires and the missiles keep taking crews and airplanes. His orders home arrive one mission short of a hundred.
Captain Tăng Minh Nhẫn, the SAM commander the Americans call the Hiccup, has studied this flight for a year. Ogletree can go home, or he can ask the flight surgeon to sign him back on for the MiG field strike.
