Captain Beau Spradlin of Abilene flies Gimlet One, an F-105F Wild Weasel named ARLENE, out of Korat in Thailand, hunting SAM sites ahead of the strikes on the Thai Nguyen steel works. In his back seat rides Captain Thad Ogletree, a former B-52 electronic warfare officer and bird-watcher who has never really been shot at, and who can hear the Fan Song radar come on in two short pulses and a long one. The bearings start pointing the wrong way, and the strike aircraft keep falling on the way home.
The battery commander, Captain Tăng Minh Nhẫn, is the man the Americans call the Hiccup. He has three prepared positions, a decoy site of bamboo and painted canvas, and the patience to wait until the egress passes behind him.
