The gunships' own rockets set the grass on fire, and the wind carries it across the landing zone under the second lift.
At the height of the dry season, Ras Hovland leads his Huey flight out of Tay Ninh West into War Zone C, building a battalion into a blocking position near the Cambodian border one lift at a time. The fire closes LZ Hornbill and splits the battalion. The half left on Hornbill is so close to the enemy that the gunships can't shoot. The only way in is the Crater, a hole in the jungle with room for one ship.
Ships are hit, crews are grounded, and copilot Jocko Tibbetts tells Ras he can live with the fear but not with Ras volunteering them for every shortage. Ras agrees to stand down when the schedule is flown. Then the battalion asks for one more platoon before dark. Ras plans to come in low over the burned ground, where the ash raises no dust. Upwind of the Crater, Dậu has lit a second fire.
