The river is over the road, a helicopter is sinking to its belly in a paddy, and Ras Hovland has only weeks left in Vietnam.
It is the monsoon in Hau Nghia province along the Oriental River. Ras still flies Homing Pigeon, now with a new copilot, Newt Cluff, and a promise he made himself: never leave anyone, or any ship, behind. His orders are to pull a rifle company, Clothesline, and a local militia platoon off a flooding dike at last light, with fewer ships than the plan wants and radar vectors from Tan Son Nhut if the ceiling comes down.
A storm cell closes the first pickup zone. Fire from a canal puts Two-Five, with Vester Holcomb as crew chief, into the paddy mud with its copilot trapped in his seat. Stash Kazmierski crosses the dike under fire to see whether it can fly. And Dậu, the Viet Cong gunner who has studied this company since its first lift, cuts the dike upstream and lets the water in.
