One of the squadron's own Broncos is down on a dike, and the wreck is the only thing anybody can see.
Lieutenant Pike puts one one nine down in a flooded Delta field with a heavy gun in the tree line behind him, then gets his man off the dike and into the rice, away from the fire. Overhead, Neil Cormack and Troy Baines have eight five-inch rockets, four guns, a fuel clock and nothing they are allowed to shoot at, because every target on that ground is too close to their own people.
A rescue helicopter will not come in until Baines can give it a point and a corridor. A rescue crewman is on the ground with the survivors, a sweep line is walking the crop toward them, and somewhere in that field a heavy weapon has held its fire all day, waiting for an aircraft to stop.
