The road is blocked. The artillery observer can see them. There is nowhere else to go.
Rain brings a mountainside down across the only road Talbot's tank destroyers can use. A farm cart, a dead mule, wet shale and boulders block a narrow ledge with a rock wall on one side and a long fall on the other. No engineers or winch vehicle can reach them, and more of the slope threatens to follow.
The crews start clearing the road by hand. Then artillery begins arriving at measured intervals, correcting every time men stand where they can be seen. Somebody on the far mountain is watching the work, and Talbot has to open the road without handing him a better target.
