The northeast monsoon has come to the coastal sand north of Chu Lai, and the enemy is fighting from hamlets the Cobras are not allowed to touch.
Chief Warrant Officer Gene Dahlberg leads a light fire team out of Ky Ha in his AH-1G Cobra, Four-One-Seven, with Teo Vitale in the front seat. The outposts held by local militia sit on white dunes beside fishing villages, and clearance to fire comes late or not at all. After a storm floods the base, the pods are filled with whatever rockets came up the road. One night a pair Dahlberg fires at a trench falls short into the wire of the outpost he is there to protect.
Major Đỗ Đình Quyến has brought his battalion down to the lowlands for the rains, and he has put a heavy machine gun in a pagoda yard. Dahlberg can go home or sign on for six more months. He signs, and goes back to the outpost to tell the militia sergeant the truth.
