Gene Dahlberg is days from going home when the North Vietnamese overrun a hill outpost in the Hiep Duc valley and march two American advisors west with their hands tied.
One of the prisoners is Lieutenant Porter Mapes, the artillery officer who has worked beside Dahlberg's Cobras since the first fight on the Saucer. The division bans artillery and air strikes on the trails while the column may be carrying Americans, and Captain Evan Rowe takes Dahlberg off the schedule under the short-timer rule. From the command helicopter Dahlberg spots strips of white cloth tied low on the bushes, and he stakes a rifle company on what they mean.
Major Đỗ Đình Quyến has read the strips too. With Kaz Pulaski in his front seat, Dahlberg tracks the column to a river bar below the mountains and plans to pin it in the open without firing a single rocket at the men in the water.
