The last drum at Kolo Point is in the tanks. There is nothing behind it.
Kittredge tells Ben Harlow plainly: if PT-219 and PT-244 burn the base's last fuel and come home with nothing, there is nothing to send out again. Their job is to meet three laden fuel lighters coming up the coast under a man named Mabry and bring them in at six knots. Harlow's boat runs on one shaft with a locked propeller below her keel, and Vessey's has a mattress shored into a shell hole at her waterline.
Caruso wires a mark on the sight glass: below it, the fuel belongs to the trip home. The after gun has been stripped to keep the port fifty firing, the forward turret shoots only straight ahead, and the enemy has learned to wait on the water a boat has to use.
