Major Merrill Strock's crew flies out of Phu Cat in the last nights before the American deadline, with an ARVN liaison, Lieutenant Viên Đắc Xuân, on a jump seat talking to the Vietnamese units below. Strock is tired. One night he skips a confirmation and lines up on lights, and his copilot, Ricky Varnado, says “No, sir” and holds the nose off. Then the monsoon arrives, and the scope, the FLIR and the flares all go blind under the cloud.
Strock's orders say go home and teach. On the last night before the deadline, a battalion and its civilians are crossing the river, a firebase is under attack, and a Mike Force camp is calling: three positions and one Stinger. Major Cù Công Mẫn has put his guns along the river under the cloud. The crew writes a rule for who gets help first, and Strock has to keep it.
