The trucks are burning in the Ford, the count is high, and the real convoy is a mile away under the trees.
Major Merrill Strock's AC-119K crew, now Stinger Two-Six, goes on temporary duty to Da Nang to hunt trucks on the trail in Laos through the busiest nights of the dry season. Their target is the Ford, a river crossing where convoys wade across in the dark. The first nights go well. The congratulations come down, and the next orders send them back to the same place for longer.
Major Cù Công Mẫn, who fought them at Bu Krak, is waiting. He relights burned wrecks to hold the gunship's attention, has the ring of spent brass measured, and sites his guns where the circle has to fly. A rule says no escort, no orbit over guns, and Strock stays anyway. When the cost comes, the crew has to find a way to stop the trucks without paying for the count.
