The camp is running out of water, the transports can't drop by day, and the gunship's flares are lighting them up for the enemy guns.
At Phu Cat, Major Merrill Strock's Stinger crew is handed a new job: cover the night supply drops into Camp Dak Tiah, a camp in a side valley of Kontum province near the Laos border. The drops are flown by Captain Hersh Ulberg's Caribou, and Strock has promised to light the valley like a ballpark. His new FLIR operator, Lieutenant Wally Nakasone, says nothing until he is sure, and on a gunship that can be too late.
Major Cù Công Mẫn, now commanding the anti-aircraft guns for the Kontum offensive, moves his guns between drops and hides the barrels under wet sacks. A fire in the right engine nearly ends the crew, and the drops are suspended. To keep the camp alive, Strock has to trust a quiet lieutenant's way of going in dark, and let him brief it himself.
