Chief Warrant Officer Forrest Haverkamp, a former flight instructor from the Texas Panhandle, flies a CH-47A named Heavy Date out of Phu Loi. His flight engineer, Ignacio Quiroga, lies flat over the hole in the cabin floor and talks him onto each load. Haverkamp runs the weight on a card before every lift; his former student, Monty Sundquist, flies the heavy nets the gunners rig. The battery commander, Captain Kendall Pennebaker, wants more shells than the hot, wet air will lift, and the mortars find the pad every time a Chinook settles on it.
