Helicopters are going down in the clearings west of Lai Khe, and every time a Chinook comes in to lift one out, a trap is waiting at the hover.
Chief Warrant Officer Forrest Haverkamp flies the CH-47A Heavy Date out of Phu Loi on recovery missions, carrying downed Hueys and gunships out of the Trapezoid on his hook. The battalion has adopted his rule: a security platoon goes in overnight and the lift comes at first light in the cool air. Then the wrecks start blowing up, a Huey falls off the hook into the bamboo, and Haverkamp lays every recovery out on a map on the revetment wall and sees the pattern is his own.
Vương Văn Thước reads the rule as well as Haverkamp does. When the gunship of Abel Tunstall, the fire team leader who covers the recoveries, goes down in a grass clearing called the Bowl, Heavy Date goes in light, with no security, and the 12.7 is already there.
