The night Pleiku was rocketed, Dustoff lost its radio, and somebody on a hilltop kept calling.
Mercy Street flies out of Pleiku with aircraft commander Tom Keane, Len Beaudry in the left seat, crew chief Milt Voss and medic Ray Mendez. Dale Rusk has come back to the unit on a bad leg, to a job with nothing that turns, and he cannot stand near a turbine starting up.
Then the rockets come in at night. A round cuts the antenna lead and the medical net goes dead. A relay site is burning on the high ground, and on a hilltop called Copper Knoll a lieutenant named Vũ and his radioman keep calling on a frequency Pleiku can no longer hear. Tom takes Mercy Street northwest over the dark ridges with nobody on the net to tell him what he will find.
