A low fold of sand in open paddy, a few old graves on it, and no other cover for a long way.
A gunship comes down in a flooded paddy outside the company's night position, and Tomczak goes past the place on the dike where Barlow told him to lie. With a new replacement holding the pilot's head, he slides the man out on a door panel while the tree line opens up. Afterward he sits against a grave mound and finds the big field dressings are gone.
The company moves on across flooded fields in single file on the dikes, and a sniper waits until everyone is in the open. By dark the platoon is pinned on a fold of sand in the middle of the paddy with its wounded spread along it, the flares coming up, and only what is left in the bags.
