They came to build a fighter strip on a flat white shelf. The sea comes up over it on every tide.
Chief Carpenter's Mate Doran lands his Seabee crew at Kuru Beach on Tolonga with a D-8 bulldozer, one crusher and one heavy roller. The first raid burns the fuel drums on the beach before the day is out. The second discovery is worse: the Sasavo shelf, the one flat place on the island, lies below the high-water line.
Vickery, the surveyor, finds the only coral that will take an airplane, a heavy gray-blue stone in the face of a single pit. Everything else crushes to flour and turns to paste in the rain. With every machine the only one of its kind, Doran has to build a runway out of what the island will actually give him.
