Three heavy machine guns are waiting in the foothills west of Tam Ky, and their crews have been drawing the Cobras' every move in a notebook.
Chief Warrant Officer Gene Dahlberg comes back from leave in Nebraska to his Cobra, Four-One-Seven, and a nervous new front-seater named Kaz Pulaski who freezes on the turret on his first run. Teo Vitale, his old front-seater, now has an aircraft of his own and wants to lead. When the guns start shooting down helicopters over clearings baited with flags and caches, the brigade turns the gun platoon loose to hunt them. Then a patrol takes a notebook off a dead soldier, and the first drawings in it are Dahlberg's own attack pattern.
Major Đỗ Đình Quyến's gunners know the call signs as they sound on the radio. Dahlberg's answer is to fly the bait himself, single ship, into a ring of hills called the Horseshoe, breaking left exactly as the notebook says he will.
