The brigade command ship had seven aboard. Now it is missing in country the scouts flew over that morning.
It is the dry season. Jack Calloway is flying a rebuilt Loach that feels too quiet, with Curtis Talley beside him noting a cut full of standing water at the Duvergier rubber plantation and a man in a sampan who trades his pole for a rifle. Off to the east, a Huey with extra antennas has been circling a canal junction since breakfast.
By afternoon that aircraft, Kingbolt, is gone, with the brigade commander, Colonel Deering, among the seven on board. Calloway and Talley search a box of paddies and canals that shows no wreck, no smoke and no fuel on the water, while Hageman's Cobra runs low on fuel overhead. Everything they noted that morning now has to be read again.
