A line of stumps cut at waist height on a knoll. Somebody wanted to see down this valley.
Warrant Officer Jack Calloway flies an OH-6 Loach scout, call sign Treetop, low enough that leaves slap the skids, with Curtis Talley in the left seat reading the ground and Captain Walt Hageman's Cobra orbiting overhead. At the end of the wet season Major Dunnigan needs to know what is moving through the green between the hills and the river: a supply party, or a fighting unit walking toward Tamarind, a new fire support base alone on a hilltop.
Talley sees the stumps on the first morning. Calloway calls them woodcutters and flies on. From then on the scouts have to read trails, bunkers and tracks from the treetops and find out what is coming before Tamarind does.
