PT-219 goes out patched, with a split plank in her side, a shell that never went off still lodged in her frames, no torpedoes, and a forward turret that fires only where the boat is pointing. Her job is to land a reconnaissance party under a man named Rhodes in a rubber boat and take them off again, possibly from a different beach, called in by a lamp in the trees.
Ben Harlow takes two leadsmen, Dupree and Dray, and Dray's book of soundings from inside the reef. The coast is full of small craft that all look alike, and one of them opens fire. After that, 219 has to stay close to that shore and wait while the coast works out that somebody has landed on it.
