A forward air controller is only as good as the grid he is given, and this one is wrong.
Captain Ben Maddox, a former mathematics teacher near the end of his tour, flies an unarmed O-1 Bird Dog out of the strip called Gravel. When a company calls for air in heavy contact, the grid it gives him is open rice paddy. Maddox asks the man what he is touching instead, and finds the company fourteen hundred meters away, pinned in a ditch in a rubber plantation with eleven wounded.
He has a pair of F-100s starting their run when a woman's voice comes up on the company frequency, speaking Vietnamese, with a child behind her. Maddox aborts the strike. Now the light is going and he has to find out where those people are before he can put anything back on the ground.
