Before the B-52s go north to Hanoi, a few Phantoms have to fly in first and hide them in a cloud of chaff.
Captain Reid Fallon flies Ruby Three in the dark, laying strips of aluminum in a corridor the bombers will follow minutes later. Lieutenant Sonny Gaines reads the chaff on his scope from the back seat. Major Milo Dunphy is back at Ubon and flying behind Dirk Halloran in Ruby Four. Halloran wears the same gray shirt every mission and touches his ladder twice.
Then the wind takes a corridor apart. North of the river, Major Đặng Hữu Tùng and his rangefinder operator Sen study the chaff on a plotting board. It always starts in the same places and ends at the rail yards, and the bombers always come down the middle. To Tùng it is a road sign the Americans have painted for him. And the small jets at the head of each band always fly at the same height.
