The wreck lies upside down in the river at the bend, and every crew that flies the valley can see it.
Captain Stav Vlachos flies a CH-46 Sea Knight, Two-Zero, in the cloud-bound mountains south and west of Vandegrift, lifting guns, cargo nets and Marines onto new fire bases on the ridges. His crew chief, Staff Sergeant Ulysses Bragg, is the squadron's rigging man; he says “No sir” without heat and never guesses. His new copilot, Lieutenant Larkin Hatfield, is the best instrument pilot in the squadron and apologizes too much.
When a sister ship goes down on a gravel bar by a ford, group wants it recovered. The lift goes wrong, and the wreck becomes a landmark. Then Two-Zero's engine sags in a hover over a ridgetop, and Bragg finds the over-temperatures Vlachos never wrote up. On a knob above the cloud base, Major Nghiêm Bá Tiệp sites his guns on the landmarks and waits for the stream to break out.
