The bridge has to be gone before morning, and every man has to be off it first.
Reconnaissance reports an enemy crossing going up on a tidal river, with heavy weapons gathering on the far side. Drennan's squad is sent to make it unusable, and it goes in short-handed: Hale is out wounded, Lindquist is barred from soft ground, and Madsen's shoulder can't carry the charges he knows how to place. The automatic weapon stays behind.
Then the crossing turns out not to be where it was supposed to be. As the squad follows it upriver and the routes home close one by one, Drennan holds to a single rule: nobody fires the bridge while one of their own is stranded on the far side.
