Every street in Saigon has three names, and Sergeant Ford knows all of them.
Staff Sergeant Ford has worked the city as a military policeman for three tours, long enough to buy its old French street signs off a scrap dealer at Khanh Hoi. His patrol is Dugan, who means to put a big engine in a Renault taxi, Cole on the radio, and Baines, who is new, gets lost reading signs, and gets letters from his father about a hog.
After a bar fight on Tu Do, the squad draws a night convoy across the city. In traffic that stops every block, the trucks are being stripped under their tarps, and then a five-ton rig is lost in the market lanes, where a vehicle that size cannot turn.
