A company of Marines is stranded on a ridge near the Laos border, the cloud is down to the treetops, and the schedule that sent them there was Vlachos's.
In the worst of the northeast monsoon, Captain Stav Vlachos and his Sea Knight crew climb on top of the cloud and let down through it on the voice of a radar team. Then rockets start falling on the fire bases from across the border, and the division wants everyone out. Vlachos is handed the clipboard to build the withdrawal lift schedule on the same day his rotation orders arrive. He puts the orders in a desk drawer.
Captain Jarrell Cobb's company is cut off on the Hatrack with wounded and little water. The radar position is hit in the middle of a letdown. The only way left is up a river valley under the cloud, out through the narrows, where Major Nghiêm Bá Tiệp has guns on both walls. Vlachos puts his own aircraft on the last lift.
