The chip light is on, the ridge is taking fire, and the wounded Marines keep coming up the ramp.
Captain Vlachos flies a CH-46 Sea Knight out of Quang Tri for a Marine helicopter squadron that has only just arrived. His copilot, Lieutenant Pembroke, irons creases into his flight suit. His crew chief, Sergeant Fanning, listens to the aircraft even after it shuts down and whistles hymns flat. Their gunner, Dorrance, gets letters that smell like the drive-in.
Northwest of the Rockpile, a Marine company holds a hill the grunts call the Knuckle, and the division wants it supplied. Vlachos hauls water, ammunition and mortars up from Vandegrift in the afternoon heat. In the trees below the hill, an enemy gunner named Tiệp, who caught birds with nets as a boy, has learned the helicopters always come back the same way. He is digging his guns in under the path a loaded Sea Knight has to climb.
