The road north was under water, and there was a wire under the water.
The battalion goes up the flooded road out of Bến Cải behind Staff Sergeant Leo Marchetti and his mine detector. Marchetti finds a command wire running off to a hedge where a man has been lying in the rain all night. The man does not set it off. He fires one round high instead, and Marchetti takes it as a message to somebody else.
The column is hit, the Berliet trucks burn, and Tín is badly wounded. With the vehicles gone and the country flooded to the chest, Keene and Hải carry him and the other wounded on poncho litters across drowned paddies and forest toward the ridge at Núi Chai, moving at night and sitting in the water when there is no ground.
